If you are on this blog then you’ve guessed that I like unique things, things that no one else has, or things that are personal and precious. Well I have just found something that epitomises everything I love about unique design. Enter the brand Love & Robots. If you want to see jewellery design innovation at its best, this is it!

Process work of the Windswept Collection by Love & Robots.

Love & Robots is based in Dublin, Ireland. They celebrate individuality and use this in their designs. They believe:

“Everyone is unique, so why not celebrate your individuality. Love & Robots is a brand that is reinventing what jewellery can be. Using cutting-edge technologies, we create bespoke pieces that are made-to-order and entirely personalised to you.”

My favourite collection, which is also the cause of the minor freak out I’m currently having, is the Windswept Collection. Are you ready for this? The collection is inspired by wind, obviously. Yet, it’s also inspired by how a piece of cloth or ribbon moves in the wind. As it’s blown back and forth the fabric will never recreate the same movement and shapes. Already I’m in love because I love fabric. When it’s draped over something, on the body, blowing in the wind, I’m fabric obsessed.

It gets better because the customer can interact with their jewellery piece. They can personalise it in such a unique, and precious way that I could actually cry. When ordering from the Windswept Collection you can choose either cloth or ribbon. Once you’ve done that you can choose a pendant or earrings. Then, and this is where it gets good, you will be asked to enter in a location and date.  The order will then calculate the wind on that day in that location and how your piece of cloth or ribbon would have moved. It does this by using an app called Forecast, which can calculate the weather on any date in the past, and 3D customisation tools.

Seriously, this is actually happening. Once it’s done, you can observe your piece moving in the wind how it would’ve moved on that day. Once you decide the best angle or movement you can pause the animation and complete your order. Love & Robots will then take the paused rendering of the piece and produce it in metal using 3D prototyping. (Basically they will print it from the computer into a 3D model in wax and then cast it in metal). You can choose between sterling silver, gold or rose gold plated or 14K yellow gold.

The piece records the memory. The way the cloth or ribbon moves is the same way your clothes would’ve moved on the day you chose to replicate. It’s a fleeting memory of a past experience you once had, but now you can have it forever. So let’s use an example. Say I want a personal pendant to remember the first time I met my dog Baxter. I did warn you dear reader, that on this blog I would refer to Baxter a lot… (and yes, I would buy a jewellery piece commemorating his memory). So I would go onto the website here, and click on the Collections tab at the top. I would then need to click on the Windswept Collection. Then I would be taken to another page where I can choose between cloth or ribbon and if I want a pendant or earrings.

For this occasion I would like a cloth pendant. So I would click on Personalise Windswept Pendant (just scroll down for ribbon and earring options). Now I need to personalise my pendant. First I need to enter a location. I met Baxter in Cape Town in the city centre more or less. Then I would choose a date. I’m a bit sketchy here, but it was my final year of high school. It must have been at the beginning of the year because I remember taking him on holiday at the end of the year and he was already quite big. So lets say March. Just to even it out let’s say March 15th slap bang in the middle. Now my pendant will start moving according to the wind on that day. Once I’ve watched its mesmerising movement for a bit I will click pause. Once you click pause that is how your pendant will look when it’s done. Then you can choose your material. Just for the hell of it I will choose 14K Yellow Gold! And voila, my one of a kind pendant is done. Now I can come back to reality and realise I cannot afford to pay €1245 for 14K Yellow Gold, sorry Baxter.

You can use any date. Your anniversary, the day you were born, the day your kids were born, or the day you travelled to an amazing place. What I also love is that Love & Robots don’t keep any stock. All their items are made to order, which means no waste, which you will know from my previous blog post I’m a big fan of. All their collections are “designed with love and made by robots,” but maintain their uniqueness above all.
